4 smart ways to upgrade your home office

Ever noticed how some days you are finished early with your to-do list, while other days you can’t focus for more than five minutes? Your workspace might be the culprit. The average person spends more time at their desk than their dining table or sofa. So why are we working at wobbly tables with chairs that make our backs hurt? Let’s fix that and no, you don’t need to spend a month’s rent or become an interior designer overnight.

No more boring walls

Staring at blank walls all day is about as inspiring as watching paint dry. That’s why a wood slat wall panel can make the change!  These wooden strips transform sad walls into something that actually makes you want to turn your camera on during Zoom calls. They look fancy but aren’t as complicated as they seem. Many come in DIY kits you can install while listening to that podcast you’re always behind on.

Lighting that works for you

Bad lighting isn’t just unflattering, it’s also draining your energy and giving you headaches. Most homes weren’t wired with dedicated workspaces in mind. Try this instead: place your desk where natural light hits it (but not where sun creates screen glare). Add a good desk lamp that points at your work, not your face. Worried about looking washed out on calls? A small light behind your monitor works very well.

A good chair

That kitchen chair you’ve been sitting on for eight hours a day? It’s not very great for your lower back. A proper office chair is all about investing in your body. Think about it: you’d spend good money on shoes you walk in daily, so why cheap out on something you sit in for so many hours? Look for chairs with adjustable height, armrests that move, and lumbar support. The “fancy gaming chair” isn’t always the answer: sometimes simpler designs with good adjustment options work better. Can’t swing a new chair right now? At minimum, grab a proper lumbar cushion and start saving.

Sound control

Nothing kills productivity like hearing your neighbour’s lawn mower, your kids’ video games, or your roommate’s work calls. Sound issues make you work harder just for basic concentration. Bookshelves help with this, by organizing your stuff and breaking up sound waves. White noise machines are cheap machines that mask distracting sounds without being distracting themselves. Do you rather listen to music? Then the investment in good noise-cancelling headphones is totally worth it.
